Monét provides refreshing sound with Love & War

July 24, 2002

Sometimes a newcomer has the star power to grab people’s attention with something unique and entertaining. New Jersey native Jerzee Monét, who was discovered by DMX while she was working as a cook, has that - an acoustic knack that spells success.

Her debut album is called “Love & War,” and the hot single “Most High” is electrifying radio stations and the charts. Jerzee’s vocals mixed with hot hip-hop tracks are similar to those of Erykah Badu and Nelly Furtado. Jerzee grabs your attention with her raspy, yet smooth-flowing vocals that range between singing and rapping.

She also had the fortune to work with some of the hottest rappers in the industry, such as DMX, Eve and Ja Rule.

“Most High” relays the pressures and hardships of living in poverty. But unlike other artists, Jerzee changes the focus of the song by asking listeners to follow her music to discover solutions for uplifting people.

She sings about attaining peace within the United States’ communities and of how children shouldn’t have gunshots replacing the sound of their laughter. She also sings about young mothers and fathers working together and putting their family first.

“Respect,” the second track, is about how her parents raised her with old-fashioned expectations of respecting everyone. Rarely does an artist write about family values and integrate them into his or her music nowadays.

Next on the album is “Work it Out,” and for all those of you in relationships, this track will speak to you. It’s about putting your relationship in perspective and having enough faith in your relationship to “work it out.”

My favorite track is “Yeah,” which features Eve. The song is about women being independent and reaching their goals and aspirations in life. Jerzee calls the song a national anthem for women.

Eve flows flawlessly over the slamming track, “Listen up playboy/I’m the pick of the litter/And I can cop it all.” Then Jerzee sings about, “Pushing a chromed-out champagne Benz with 20-inch rims.”

Together, these ladies make “Yeah” a hot track that should be the next radio single.

But then there’s “Twisted,” with sexy Ja Rule, who has all the hot ladies in the industry on his two-way. “Twisted” is all about how that special person makes you feel, and who better to sing the chorus than Ja Rule? He raps about the good times and good livin‘ of togetherness and how he needs his girl to warm his soul.

Last on the album is the remix of “Most High,” with DMX’s growling vocals complementing Monét’s singing.

So, if your searching for a refreshing new sound in music, check out Jerzee Monét’s album because her creativity has the potential to reach masses with a positive message.
