5 Spartans get drafted

With the season already finished, the baseball team set another record with five players drafted in Major League Baseball’s 2002 First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Senior center fielder Chris McCuiston and junior catcher Brady Burrill were selected Wednesday, setting the new record. McCuiston was selected in the 31st round by the Detroit Tigers as the 920th overall pick, while Burrill was chosen in round 34 by the Seattle Mariners as the 1,030th selection.

Burrill said he intends to return to the team for his final year of eligibility.

Junior right fielder Bob Malek (fourth round), senior shortstop Jared Koutnik (16th round) and senior pitcher Nick Bates (22nd round) were selected on the first day of the draft.

Prior to this year’s draft, the Spartans’ highest number of selections was four, which occurred in 1984, 1988 and 1998.
