Terek qualifies for NCAA

April 22, 2002

Senior decathlete Paul Terek automatically qualified for this year’s NCAA Championships by winning the decathlon at the Mount San Antonio College Relays in California on Friday.

Terek’s 7,926 points were good for the third-best score in the NCAA this season.

Sophomore Steve Manz competed in the discus throw and shot put at the prestigious Mount SAC event, while seniors Matt Deering (pole vault) and Jeff Kus (high jump) also participated in the meet.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Spartan track team was in Kalamazoo for the Western Michigan Quadrangular this weekend. Junior Andy Lixey and sophomore Jason Mueller finished second and third, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run, while freshman Andy Marsh and sophomore Kevin Yokom finished second and third, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run.

Junior Wilson Ogbeide placed second in the 400-meter dash and senior Ben Logan finished second in the javelin throw at Western. The depleted Spartans finished fourth out of four teams.
