Greek week begins with games

April 8, 2002

A rope, potato sacks and Hula-Hoops were all part of the Greek Week kickoff on Sunday.

Fourteen teams, each with one sorority and two fraternities, participated in field events at noon in the Valley Court field. Teams get points throughout the week for winning events and for attendance.

Field events included relay races, a tug-of-war contest, a volleyball tournament and a Hula-Hoop contest.

Accounting sophomore Julie Barbaglia said Greek Week is a positive activity for the greek system.

“A lot of times you hear negative stuff about greeks and these activities show that isn’t true,” the Kappa Delta member said. “It’s also a great way to meet people from other houses that you might not normally hang out with.”

Philip Lauri II, a general management freshman and Alpha Kappa Psi member, agreed.

“The part I Iike about Greek Week is that we are actually doing something good,” he said.

Greek Week is part of the celebration of 130 years of greek life on campus. Money from activities will be given to Coaches for Kids, Haven House, Special Olympics, United Way, Children’s Miracle Network and Verlinden Elementary School in Lansing.

“It unites the greeks by raising money for service organizations,” said Amy VanCoppenolle a Kappa Alpha Theta member and social relations senior. “It really gets more people involved in different areas of the community that they might not have been able to be involved in before.”

Journalism junior and Kappa Delta member Krista Chambers said she is excited that money will be donated to Special Olympics.

“I have a cousin who takes part in it,” she said. “And it’s cool to see all the different houses out here for one cause.”

The next slated Greek Week activity is MTV Fundraising Night at 7 p.m. today in the Auditorium. Greek members will perform synchronized dance routines similar to music videos and will be judged on creativity.

Admission is $3 per person or $2 with the donation of a canned good.

“It binds all of the greeks together to just get out there and have fun,” said Beth Colaluca a no- preference freshman and Delta Gamma member. “Even though I’m a new member, I’m really excited about Greek Week and I’m ready to participate.”
