Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

Article portrayed greeks negatively

I would like to express my extreme disappointment in The State News’ biased portrayal of the greek system in the article “T-shirts prompt greek action” (SN 4/10). What does The State News have against greeks?

There have been countless opportunities to publish the many positive contributions greeks have made to the community and the university. This week, for example, greeks are uniting to raise tens of thousands of dollars through countless volunteer hours to benefit several charities in our annual Greek Week.

Instead of covering Greek Week, as a more appropriate representation of the entire greek community, every Spartan who picks up a paper reads about one fraternity who apparently decided to haze some pledges.

This event is so far from representative of our entire population, yet it made the front page while Greek Week barely made the opening section.

Further, the article in Wednesday’s paper was labeled as a lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender issue. I don’t doubt it was, but why don’t you also include that it is an anti-greek article?

I find it sad that the most pressing news to be covered deals with a few fraternity boys in pink T-shirts. What about the Lansing City Council member’s sexual harassment-related resignation, which was at the end of the section? I don’t doubt the relevance of covering this event, but is it really front page material?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have covered it eight days ago, when it happened, or to wait until after the judicial board ruled on it Wednesday?

Greeks are a major part of MSU’s campus and by inaccurately portraying us, you are destroying a thriving part of the university. Like it or not, destroying a part takes a toll on the whole university.
