Remix album a solid compliment

March 13, 2002

Sometimes the full length record isn’t enough - occasionally the ultimate fan needs more.

But this isn’t always a plus, as bands may jump the gun with another product simply to make an extra buck.

Take, for instance, Dave Matthews Band, which releases a new live record every month. Limp Bizkit released a lackluster remix record in 2001.

Gorillaz don’t exactly have the same résumé as either of the two previous bands, so this record makes more sense.

It answers the call of devoted followers and gives them a collection of B-sides, rarities and remixes that are variant enough from the latest record to please a whole new crowd of listeners.

And even though these loony characters are the kind of group either loved or hated, they construct some catchy material.

There are two versions of “19-2000.” The “Soul Child Remix” is a foot tapping and funky number, while “The Wiseguys House of Wisdom remix” gives the song a techno and disco-dance beat.

“Latin Simone” rattles along with insights from the bands hit single “Clint Eastwood.”

And for those who see “Clint Eastwood” as the only effort from this group to “Make their day,” there’s a nifty remix of that here, too.

“Hip Albatross” is a quiet song with various conversations and record fuzz intruding in its background.

Though best absorbed by devout Gorillaz fans, this is a solid release others can at least appreciate.
