CCHA honors two Spartans

March 15, 2002

Junior goaltender Ryan Miller is the CCHA Player of the Year for the second straight season - capturing the honor at the CCHA Awards Banquet on Thursday night at Fox Theatre in Detroit.

The league’s 12 coaches dubbed the East Lansing native the CCHA’s premier player after posting conference-leading numbers in goals against average (1.64), saves percentage (.941) and shutouts (eight). He ranked second in league wins (18) and minutes played (1,684:58).

Miller is the second person to win the award back-to-back, after Michigan’s Brendan Morrison did so in 1996-97. Miller also won the CCHA’s Best Goaltender award by posting the lowest goals against average in the league.

He was also named one of 10 Hobey Baker Award semifinalists Thursday afternoon.

MSU junior defenseman John-Michael Liles was the only other Spartan to be honored at Thursday’s CCHA Awards - claiming Best Offensive Defenseman accolades. Liles led all defensemen in the nation with 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) this season.

But MSU’s streak of five-straight CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman awards was snapped when U-M’s Mike Komisarek took the honor.

Other honorees in Detroit on Thursday included Alaska-Fairbanks head coach Guy Gadowsky winning CCHA Coach of the Year, Western Michigan forward Pat Dwyer, getting CCHA Rookie of the Year, and Fairbanks forward Bobby Andrews claiming Best Defensive Forward.

Ohio State defenseman Scott Titus received the Terry Flanagan Memorial Award, recognizing his recovery from a bone infection in his arm. U-M backup goaltender Kevin O’Malley won the Mike and Marian Ilitch Humanitarian Award as the league’s top citizen on and off the ice.
