Black event shows double standards

I’m responding to the editorial “Taking pride” (SN 3/25). Last time I checked, minority status included a variety of ethnicities, and yet those working on the Black Celebratory claim this status while only promoting black pride due to their low retention rates.

Where are the other minorities and why don’t they have their race titles in the name of the event?

The State News also had a quote that said “students taking part in this event are lucky to spend time with an intimate group of friends before they walk.” What about the rest of us?

Everyone knows if there was a white celebratory, there would be a wave of criticism. Yet blacks are allowed to have one. So much for equal treatment.

Finally, there was another quote that said other students take part in similar ceremonies all the time. I beg to differ. Graduating with our college, campus groups and celebrating with our friends are things that everyone takes part in, even blacks.

MSU claims to be an equal opportunity institution. It’s about time it starts acting like one.
