As the mother of Eric Blair, I feel that I need to make a statement regarding the recent developments that have occurred regarding the charges filed against the students regarding Eric’s death.

I wholeheartedly agree with The State News’ editorial “Dangerous” (SN 3/27).

While our lives, Eric’s friends’ lives and the lives of these five young people will be forever changed by Eric’s death, I too, do not think that this is going to deter students from drinking.

I also agree that new approaches have to be taken. There should be an effort, not only on behalf of the local police and other community agencies, but MSU itself.

There has got to be a way to get the word out to new students who arrive during fall orientation.

What about walking the campus streets on evenings that sorority initiations are taking place and distributing information on the possible consequences of overdrinking or binge drinking?

I can tell you that the only way that I will be able to begin to come to terms with the death of my precious son is to do something positive.

If there is anyone out there that has ideas, I would be more than willing to come to Lansing and assist in any way that I can to try to make something positive out of such a senseless, tragic event.

Maybe we can make a difference. We’ll never know unless we try.
