Union wont strike after break

February 26, 2002

Student groups Direct Action and Students for Economic Justice support a one-day strike on March 11 that calls for all students to not participate in class. The strike is to support MSU’s Graduate Employees Union fight for a contract.

Members of Direct Action met with the graduate union Monday night to discuss if the union would support Direct Action’s one-day strike.

University spokesman Terry Denbow said university officials could not comment.

Jennifer Nichols, information officer for the union, said union members will not strike on March 11. But Nichols said the union will support undergraduates who do not go to class that day.

“We’re really happy that undergraduates recognize the importance of these issues,” she said. “We definitely support students taking action for themselves.”

Shaun Godwin, an organizer with Direct Action, said it would be in the school’s best interest to give teaching assistants better health care and wages.

“This school has a lot of money,” the anthropology junior said. “For them to claim poverty and that they can’t pay the people who teach us on a daily basis is to me totally false, because they raised our tuition 8 percent - they are going to raise it again.”
