Tough call

RHA isnt to blame for homophobia, bigotry shown in last months Toughman Contest

It’s not the Residence Halls Association’s fault the Toughman Contest it traveled to last month lacked common decency.

On Wednesday, RHA representatives from MSU’s lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community raised concerns about the organization’s role in sponsoring a trip of more than 25 students to attend the slugfest at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

During an intermission session between boxing bouts, the fight’s promoters put on a “homosexual” mock match.

The bout featured two male fighters slapping one another and ended with one fighter, clad in a green dress, mimicking sexual intercourse with his fallen opponent.

In response to the LBGT community’s concerns, RHA is drafting two letters addressing the issue.

The first will be sent to the fight’s promotion company, AdorAble Promotions Inc., withdrawing the organization’s future support.

The second will be sent to the Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay-Transgendered and Straight Ally Students, apologizing to its community for sponsoring the trip to the event.

If no apology was offered, LBGT leaders alluded to the possibility of more than 300 students boycotting the organization by seeking refunds on their $21-per-semester RHA tax.

The boycott from the LBGT community could take a several-thousand-dollar chunk out of RHA’s budget and would be a drastic punishment for no crime.

While the Toughman Contest’s content was in poor taste and an embarrassment to the organizations that put their names on its bill, such as MSU and the University of Michigan, the alliance is seeking an apology from the wrong people.

It’s not RHA’s fault the events at the contest were offensive. The organization had sponsored the trip to the Palace with the good intentions of offering students an entertainment opportunity.

RHA says it had no prior knowledge of the mock fight before it was performed.

If the alliance wants an apology, it should seek it from the fight’s promoters.

RHA is doing its duty by withdrawing its support from future AdorAble Promotions events, and MSU promoters would be wise to do the same.

It’s disturbing that an entertainment company would put on something so repulsive.

MSU and RHA have taken many steps in recent years to open minds and policies to promote LBGT equalities.

For years, the alliance has held a voting seat in RHA. Last month, RHA welcomed LBGT caucuses into its organization by providing them with voting seats as well

The association has continuously supported on-campus equalities for LBGT community members.

It’s hard to understand why alliance members would blame one of its supporters for something it had no control over.

The type of tasteless and offensive humor portrayed by Toughman Contest promoters needs to stop.

To achieve that goal, petitions should be aimed to the problem’s source, not innocent bystanders.
