I am writing to express my pleasure of the sorely needed objectivity among liberals provided by Andrew Goetz in his column Conservative voices refreshing compared to liberal campus majority (SN 2/25).
I, too, am a moderate liberal who grew up smothered by suburban conservatism. Frustrated with the overwhelmingly conservative perspective that suburban life provided, I looked forward to moving to a place that would be more open to different ideas.
But what I found was not a melting pot of ideas, but a place that is as liberal as my hometown is conservative.
Many on the left feel they can discount ideas of those on the right. By doing this, liberals are imposing the same biases on conservatives they claim the conservatives are guilty of.
While I do not agree with many conservative ideas, I have realized that its important for us not to ignore them. If we choose to listen only to liberals or only conservatives, we are depriving ourselves of the diversity liberalism claims to cherish.
