Take a peek behind the curtain and test drive the NEW StateNews.com today!

Cartoonist is good despite criticism

This has been a tough year for The State News editorial cartoon department. They lost a very talented and very astute artist last year and had to find someone to fill his shoes. They have chosen Nate Allen. It is my opinion that they have made an excellent choice.

His comics are good and their subject matter is always amusing. So far though, I have read two letters to the editor complaining about his comics.

All I have to say is, give it a rest. Editorial cartoons are meant to push the envelope, they are meant to say what people don’t want to hear and most of all they are meant to be funny. I have not found any of Allen’s comics, as of yet, to be offensive.

The comic about Dave Thomas - that was funny. If The State News published a similar comic about Colonel Sanders, everyone would think it was funny. If we cannot laugh at the serious side of life, we are all in a lot of trouble.

I also think it’s the job of an editorial cartoonist to question what we are being told. We all know the American public knows next to nothing when it comes to the truth about this whole war we are fighting right now. So if Allen wants to question what we know in a humorous way, good for him.

I say, Nate, keep up the good work.
