East Lansing employees are asking MSU students to donate blood Wednesday.
The City of East Lansing Employees Second Annual Blood Drive is being held from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbott Road.
Carolyn Bennett, community development administrator for the city, said the number of donors is much lower than last year. Last years drive had 50 participants to this years 35 participants already signed up.
Bennett said she wants the drive to give at least 50 units of blood, and she is depending on MSU student participation.
I want to encourage and invite any MSU student to take part in the drive, she said. We really need their help.
Paige Jones, a psychology senior said that she wasnt aware of the blood drive and that more students might go if they knew about it.
Maybe they could advertise more or have a giveaway, she said. But Id probably go either way.
East Lansing City Manager Ted Staton said that its important for everyone to give blood.
There was an outpouring immediately after Sept. 11 to give blood and fulfill our personal philanthropies, he said. It decreased as the event faded from our memories, but blood donations are important year-round.
To give blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and not have donated in the past 56 days. Donors must fill out a questionnaire, bring a list of medications, and two pieces of identification. Bennett said that those interested in donating should know that it is a rewarding experience.
I see it as putting good vibes into the world, Bennett said.
Donors can schedule a 15-minute time slot by calling Carolyn Bennett at (517)319-6864.
