Swimming

MSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished competition Saturday in the 26th annual Rainbow Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii. Times from the two-day meet were not scored, but will count toward NCAA qualifying. Junior Katie Duncombe took first place in the 100-yard backstroke (56.54), 100-yard individual medley (58.86), 50-yard backstroke (26.28), 200-yard backstroke (2:06.39)and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.54). Junior Joe Brennan took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.06)for the men.

Wrestling

The MSU wrestling team (2-1)defeated Clarion (0-6)34-7 Saturday. Junior Charles Sageman and sophomore Nathaniel Mesyn each scored pins for the Spartans. Mesyn’s pin came in 31 seconds as he recorded his 11th victory of the season. The team was coming off a sixth place finish in a field of 61 at the 39th annual Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern Dec. 29-30.

Gymnastics

The MSU gymnastics team started the season with its Green and White scrimmage Sunday at Jenison Field House. The Green narrowly defeated the White 114.850-114.450. Junior Julie Devaty had the highest score of the day with a 9.900 on the balance beam. Christy Linder and Lindsay Trainham had the best total scores with 38.300. The MSU gymnastics team starts its season Friday when it hosts West Virginia, Western Michigan and Iowa State at Jenison Field House at 8 p.m.
