Conference helps minorities adjust
The False Expectations Appearing Real conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 2 in the Union. The seminar is designed to help minority students learn study and time-management skills and techniques to successfully transition into college.

The conference is free to MSU students, $10 for non-MSU students and $20 for adults. Registration ends Friday.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Racial Ethnic Student Affairs, the Office of Supportive Services, the Undergraduate University Division and the vice president for student affairs and services.

“The most important thing is, the conference offers an opportunity for students to build skills for success in college,” said Nikki O’Brien, coordinator for African-American student affairs at ORESA. “It’s really good at providing testimony from other students for what works at MSU and what doesn’t.”

John Lee, a psychologist at the Counseling Center, will be teaching a session titled, “The Art of Decision Making.”

“The objective is to help students become aware of how they make decisions and set priorities,” he said. “To be successful in college, you have to be conscious of how you make decisions and set priorities.”

Lee said the way students behave in high school varies once they enter college because of stress and responsibility.

“The way we make decisions in high school might not be the way we make them in college,” he said. “In high school, so many people were making decisions for you. It varies by the individual too. Some students have a certain way of setting priorities and making decisions that doesn’t work for others.”

Sessions develop new leadership
MSU will host the 19th annual Student Leadership Conference Saturday at Kellogg Center.

The event, “Accepting the Leadership Challenge in Times of Change,” will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and students can register for the conference from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The focus of the event is to better prepare students for leadership roles by having them participate in interactive leadership development training opportunities.

Author and motivational speaker Gary Tuerack will present a keynote speech, “Discovering the Secrets of the World’s Most Successful People.”

Participants will have the option to engage in breakout sessions for the remainder of the afternoon.

There is a fee of $10 per person for the conference or $8 per person in groups of 10 or more. Group and individual registration forms are available in rooms 101 or 339 in Student Services. Registration forms also are available online at www.studentlife.msu.edu/leadership/conference.htm
