Sundae allots fans Homecoming feast

October 15, 2001

Friday’s issue of The State News lay covered in melted ice cream as community members celebrated the fourth annual Super Bowl Sundae on Farm Lane and Wilson Road.

MSU Dairy Store and Dairy Plant employees filled a sanitized pond liner at 2:05 p.m. Friday with 480 gallons of ice cream and topped it with 10 gallons of chocolate sauce, two gallons of maraschino cherries and 21 cans of whipped cream.

The sundae was larger than previous years and was completed and ready to be consumed by 2:40 p.m.

The number of drooling mouths increased as the ice cream pyramid ascended.

Okemos resident Hannah Michner, 3, pulled her mother Mary Michner and her 18-month-old cousin Molly Cavanaugh across the intersection of the two streets.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I want pink ice cream today.”

Dairy Plant employee Rodney Clark said the stress level of the workers is high while they prepare the sundae, but their hard work pays off.

“When we get to step back and watch all the people and all the kids, it’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Out of the 29 flavors of ice cream the Dairy Plant produces, only 25 were used to build the sundae because of concerns of nut allergies.

Dairy Store Manager Tamara West said Super Bowl Sundae helps make people aware of the products the store sells.

“It’s an addition to Homecoming events and it lets people know we’re here and happy to serve them,” she said.

Lansing resident Ben Schwarz-Schneider, 14, said this was his first Super Bowl Sundae.

“I’m excited, I can’t wait until they start making it,” he said.

Former MSU employee Fred Kletke said he has been eating MSU ice cream since 1939.

“This campus is my stamping grounds. Anything free here, I’m gonna go get it,” Kletke said.

Kletke got the first bowl of ice cream.

“All MSU ice cream is good,” he said.

International business freshman Francois Berranen said the MSU Dairy Store has quality ice cream.

“I came because it tastes good and it’s free,” he said. “My only complaint is that they don’t have Superman ice cream.”

Telecommunication sophomore Mark Hollosy said he enjoyed his bowl of raspberry ice cream.

“It’s really good,” he said. “I think I’m addicted.”
