Greeks soccer tournament benefits Make-A-Wish

October 19, 2001

Chi Omega and Delta Sigma Pi will host a benefit soccer tournament Sunday to Make-A-Wish for Karen King.

The second annual Karen King Kickoff soccer tournament will raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in honor of King, an MSU student who was killed in January 1997.

King was sexually assaulted and killed after being abducted outside a store in Saginaw.

Two men were convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, carjacking, armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a firearm.

King was pursuing a psychology degree and aspired to work with young children.

Her mother, Linda King, said the benefit tournament is a great way to honor her daughter.

“Kids were her big thing. If the psychology thing didn’t work out she wanted to be an elementary school teacher,” she said.

In its second year, tournament sponsors say they are hoping for more student involvement.

“Last year we had quite a few greeks. This year, we want to have more outside students involved,” said, Jane Kim, philanthropy chair of Chi Omega.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation was created in 1980 to give children with a life-threatening illness a chance to have a wish granted.

“I think she would be glad that the benefit is helping out kids,” Linda King said. “She was interested in helping kids without families or kids who were ill, she just had such a big heart.”

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Munn field. All MSU students are welcome to form teams. A $50 registration fee is required. To register, call Jane Kim at (517)351-4539.
