McPherson promotes open dialogue today

MSU President M. Peter McPherson will visit Akers Hall today in an effort to promote open dialogue among students living on campus.

The open forum, which is organized by the Residence Halls Association, will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m at the West Akers Hall Terrace Room.

“I visit the halls periodically to make sure I am constantly aware of student issues and concerns,” McPherson said. “These discussions are always very productive, and students always have helpful questions and comments for me.”

McPherson said student feedback has assisted him with various projects in the dorms, such as his decision to install peepholes.

RHA arranges periodic visits to all the complexes on campus by McPherson throughout the academic year.

“President McPherson’s periodic visits will give him a chance to have eye-to-eye contact with residents in the dorms,” said Josh Minor, RHA’s internal vice president. “It’s a great opportunity for students to ask him questions and interact with him.”

Fair to promote internships, job openings

Students can seek opportunities for internships and permanent job placements at the Career Gallery, MSU’s largest career fair.

The fair, which is open to all students and majors, will be held from 2-7 p.m. at Breslin Center.

The event is sponsored by the Lear Corporation Career Services Center and co-hosted by the Eli Broad College of Business and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Vern Mason, assistant director of the Lear Center, said the center is excited about the event, at which about 4,000 students are expected to attend.

“It is the largest single career fair that we know of in Michigan,” he said. “We are proud of the caliber of the students that make the companies continue to come back to MSU.”

Within the last five years, the number of participating companies has increased by more than 100. Many of the more than 175 companies slated to participate this year are well-known headliners and sponsors of the fair.

Some of the companies include IBM, the Dow Chemical Company, General Motors Corp., Cintas Corporation, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Union Pacific Railroad.

Mason said these companies have been the university’s partners over the years and recruit in large numbers.
