Mens soccer splits weekend games

September 24, 2001

The MSU men’s soccer team began the weekend on a positive note, before losing to Big Ten powerhouse Indiana on Sunday.

The Spartan men’s soccer team got two goals from freshman forward Ryan McMahen en route to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Valparaiso Crusaders on Friday at Old College Field.

The Crusaders started the scoring 20 minutes into the first half, but a mere 10 seconds later, McMahen took a pass from sophomore midfielder Jeffrey Krass and evened up the score.

Five minutes later, freshman midfielder/forward Jordan Gruber gave the Spartans (4-1) a lead with a head ball goal.

Valpo knotted the game back up at two just before the half, but early in the second half, Krass and McMahen hooked up again for the game-winning goal.

The team then traveled to Bloomington, Ind., to open the Big Ten season against soccer powerhouse Indiana on Sunday and lost 3-0.

MSU fell to 4-2 overall, 0-1 in the Big Ten.
