The apparent terrorist attacks that shook the world today had some immediate effects on the campus and surrounding communities:
While classes at MSU are still open, Cooley Law School, Lansing Community College, the University of Michigan, Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University and Ferris State University have all canceled classes.
Wayne State University canceled classes at 4 p.m. today and tomorrow.
The Michigan State Police and the Lansing Police Department activated emergency operations systems this morning as a precaution.
No problems have been reported in Michigan. MSU and East Lansing police are heightening security.
The MSU Counseling Center is providing on-site support for students in 207 Student Services.
Counseling Center staff are available to meet with groups of students.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is providing Family Welfare Inquiry Services at (517) 484-7461. Individuals seeking assistance should be prepared to provide as much information as possible on family members they wish to inquire about including home and work phone numbers and addresses.
In Lansing, the state Capitol and the Farnum, Roosevelt and Olds Plaza buildings are under increased security. Identification is required for entry.
No flights are departing or arriving at Capital City Airport, with the possible exception of aircrafts that are still airborne and need a safe haven to land.
Several roadways coming in the airport have been closed with traffic being diverted.
East Lansing and Jackson Western schools canceled after-school activities.
DeWitt School District canceled after-school activities, but will still have day care.
The Lansing School District classes and after-school activities are remaining open.
Lansing Mall, 5330 W. Saginaw Hwy., closed at 1 p.m. today. Meridian Mall Shopping Center, 1982 W. Grand River Ave., is remaining open, but stores may use their own discretion about remaining open.
All Major League Baseball games are canceled today, including tonights game between the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers. Officials are considering postponing the remainder of the season.
East Lansing City Council worksession scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today is canceled.
East Lansing City Hall is open until 5 p.m. and is under increased security.
Primary elections statewide will continue as planned, according to the Secretary of State Candice Miller. Todays races include a primary election in Detroits mayoral race and a special election primary for a Macomb County seat in the state Senate.
Michigans U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow, of Lansing, and Carl Levin, of Detroit, and U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, are safe in Washington, D.C. They were evacuated from their offices.
Gov. John Engler remained in the Lansing area Tuesday. State Sen. Dianne Byrum, D-Onondaga, continued meetings. State Rep. Gretchen Whitmer, D-East Lansing, could not be reached.
Campus WKAR television and radio stations have altered regular scheduled programming to cover the New York City and Washington, D.C., attacks.
