How many music establishments around East Lansing can you visit to see 10 bands for 50 cents per band? Not too many.
However, itll be possible Saturday, when East Lansing Recreation & Arts presents its Auditory Coffeehouse concert at the Bailey Community Center, 300 Bailey St.
This years event is the first in which 10 bands will play for most of Saturday - from 3 p.m. to midnight - and admission will only be $5.
Were trying to get a regular series of music in town, said Leslie Donaldson, ELRAs fine arts coordinator. We want to have something fun to do that you can walk to.
The plethora of bands playing the alcohol- and tobacco-free show hail from all over the state.
Local rockers Rattling Wall Collective wont have far to go to get to Bailey, while The Pop Project is traveling from Ann Arbor for the show. Princess Dragon Mom, which will close the concert, is based in Livonia.
Surf-rock, acoustic pop and upbeat dance music, among other styles, will be represented at the show.
Theres a pretty eclectic mix this year, Donaldson said.
Donaldson said the crowd should be larger than in past years, when around 150 people showed up. Because this will be an all-day event, Donaldson expects more than 300 people to come out.
The crowds have been very responsive and very cool, Donaldson said. Theyve been really laid-back and there have been no problems.
Donaldson said putting on a longer show helps get people to come out and gives more bands an opportunity to play.
Donaldson said ELRA hopes this type of concert catches on so there can be weekend-long festivals that give more bands chances to play their music for the public. She also said the summer season provides a perfect setting for marathon concerts, which ELRA hopes to throw more of in years to come.
Hopefully this type of thing can continue in the future, Donaldson said. We are looking for some financial support so we can make it better for everyone involved.
