Affirmative action needs second look

With regard to Rishi Kundi’s column (“Good grades don’t always make good doctors,” SN 6/21): touchdown Mr. Kundi! You could not have been more on target. However, it is ludicrous to think those of privilege will not fight back by whatever means necessary. After all, they wish to preserve our country’s version of a caste system.

Troubling in your column was your use of Native American, which the so-called politically correct started using to label American Indian/Alaskan Native populations awhile back.

If 57 percent of American Indians/Alaskan Natives had bachelor’s degrees, as was inadvertently stated in your editorial, Native American communities would be ecstatic.

In reality, about 8 percent of American Indians/Alaskan Natives receive bachelor’s degrees. And if American colleges and universities were required to verify their so-called self-identified Native American counts, that percentage would be lower yet. They choose not to, however, because it would lower their affirmative action counts for federal reporting purposes.

Yes, the affirmative action system is deeply flawed. Perhaps, Mr. Kundi, you intended to say 57 percent of native-born Asians had bachelor’s degrees?
