Woman critical after car accident

May 14, 2001
Police and firefighters work to clean up the wreckage of an accident that occurred at the intersection of Jolly and Hagadorn roads. The two-car accident occurred Sunday evening, and one woman is in critical condition.

A 43-year-old woman is listed in critical condition after a van collided with the car she was riding in near the intersection of Hagadorn and Jolly roads Sunday night.

“I saw that he was going through the light,” said Pat Whittier, an East Lansing resident who was traveling south on Hagadorn Road on her motorcycle behind the van when the accident occurred. “The car didn’t roll, but it spun around. It was a noisy crash.”

Emergency staff members were forced to remove the top of the Toyota Corolla, which was traveling east on Jolly Road, to free the three people inside. All three were taken to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital, with only the 43-year-old woman seriously injured. The driver of the van was taken to Ingham County Regional Medical Center, where authorities say he’s in stable condition.

The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m., when witnesses say the driver of the van drove through a red light, colliding with the Toyota Corolla. The driver of the van exited the vehicle under his own will and rushed to the other car to examine damage, witnesses say.

“The extent of the injuries are not known at this time,” Ingham County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark O’Farrell said.

Nearly a dozen police vehicles, as well as several ambulances and two fire engines, were at the scene as officials cleaned up the glass scattered along the intersection.
