Police briefs 05/24/01

A fire at East Lansing Community Television station WELG has caused the temporary discontinuation of three local channels.The fire occurred at about 9 p.m. Sunday in the channel’s studios, which are located at East Lansing City Hall, 410 Abbott Road.The fire reportedly occurred when some electronic equipment overheated and ignited a television monitor in the editing department. Damage is estimated between $10,000 and $15,000. Station Manager Dan Leys reportedly entered the studio to feed several exotic fish located in his office when he saw the fire and attempted to extinguish it. Cable service will be off the air for a few weeks, said Judith Taran, East Lansing communications director. She said the department hopes to be up and running again by June 5.

  • $100 was taken from the manager’s office at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education between May 17 and Tuesday, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. The money was taken from a cash box in the office, which was not locked at the time. An investigation is pending.
