The list of East Lansings theatrical mix for the 2001-02 season is out.
We goosed the list up, and now everyone is saying Wow, said Marcus Olson, head of acting at MSU.
This fall, Suburbia, an edgy comedy/drama about suburban kids on the brink, and Shakespeares Hamlet will grace Wharton Centers Pasant Theatre stage, while the spring will offer the MSU Repertory Dance Company Concert and the musical Hair.
The variety is pleasing to theater junior Mike McKeogh, who looks forward to trying out for any of the text-rich parts in Hamlet.
Theres a total difference and variety in the shows this year, he said. Weve got Hamlet, a Shakespearean classic, then Suburbia is contemporary, about kids who hang out behind this convenient store.
Further diversifying the Department of Theatres selection is For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf, which exports what it means to be of color and female in the 20th century, and Been Taken, a play dealing with subject matters that range from insurance scams to date rape.
Theres get-down, get-funky theater, then exciting and poetic theater, then classic Shakespeare, Olson said. Were cruising a variety of turf, and I like the versatility of the season.
The Wharton Center has also announced its 2001-02 season lineup, which will include the shows South Pacific, Fosse, Music Man, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Kiss Me Kate.
Dixie Durr, chairwoman for the Department of Theatre who will direct the MSU Repertory Dance Company Concert, said she saw Kiss Me Kate in New York last summer.
Its a stunning production and the dancing is great, she said.
