Police briefs 04/09/01

A Friday night accident in Lansing Township left two 13-year-olds from Lansing dead and a 32-year-old Lansing man in jail.Kyle Karp and Thomas Sean Schneider were struck by a car at about 10:10 p.m. Friday while walking westbound along Lake Lansing Road near Coolidge Road, police said. Both died at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.The car fled the scene but was identified a short distance from the accident by Lansing police officers using witness information.Donald Harris was arrested at his Lansing home, and was arraigned Saturday on two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, causing death, and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.He was jailed on a $200,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing, which is slated for April 19.The accident remains under investigation.

  • An 18-year-old male student will face campus judiciary charges after he told police he and some friends threw a bedframe from his seventh-floor North Hubbard Hall room window.MSU police were called to North Hubbard Hall after a 19-year-old female student living on the sixth floor reported her room window broken at about 4 a.m. Saturday, MSU police Sgt. Maureen Ramsey said. Upon investigation, police discovered the seventh-floor window above the student’s was also broken.Upon entering the seventh-floor room to question the student about the window, an MSU police officer noticed grass and dirt on the student’s bed. After questioning the student about the incident, he told the officer he and a group of friends had pushed the bed out the window, breaking it and the window below.The group then retrieved the bed, Ramsey said.Damage is estimated at $1,100. No one was injured because of the incident.
  • Two Lansing-area youths were arrested Sunday morning after they were caught attempting to steal three bicycles near the West Circle dorms.A 16-year-old from Lansing and a 12-year-old from Grand Ledge were videotaped by MSU police at 6 a.m. Sunday cutting the locks on three bicycles near Lot 5, behind the dorms, Ramsey said. The bikes, valued at $400 each, were recovered.Damage to the locks is estimated at $75. The youths were turned over to their parents’ custody.
  • A 19-year-old male student reported his 2000 Pontiac Grand Am damaged and several items stolen.The rear and passenger rear windows of the car were smashed and motor oil was poured inside the vehicle while it was parked in Lot 30, near Holmes Hall, between 2:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, Ramsey said. The car had also been keyed and a silver necklace and cell phone were stolen.Losses are valued at $900 and damage is estimated at $800. Police have no suspects.
  • A 20-year-old female student reported her 1995 Pontiac Grand Am broken into and a radar detector stolen.The theft occurred between noon Friday and 8:45 a.m. Saturday while the car was parked in Lot 83 on Service Road, Ramsey said. The passenger door window had been smashed.The detector is valued at $200 and damage is estimated at $125. Police have no suspects.
