Judo members earn medals

March 28, 2001

Four members of the MSU Judo Club took home medals after competing in the Michigan Open on Sunday at IM Sports-West.

Elisha Demido, Patrick Gavin, Brian Wilson and Nicolas Cascaddancompeted against judo players from the Midwest and Canada in a tournament equivalent to state finals.

Both Demido and Gavin placed second in their weight classes. Wilson and Cascaddan, a criminal justice junior, placed third.

“As a group, things went well,” said Wilson, a biology and education junior. “I’m glad to see some of our guys take home medals.”

All players fought several matches in an attempt to leave with a medal placement. Gavin and Cascaddan found themselves fighting against each other.

“It’s really a waste (fighting each other),” said Gavin, a finance senior. “We go against each other every day in practice, so we know each other’s techniques. We want to fight for the challenge.”

Coach Liz Spaeth was also confident and pleased with the tournament’s outcome.

“I saw a great deal of improvement in their ability to attack and be aggressive,” she said. “I want to see what we can do the next time.”
