SN coverage unfair to activists

I was extremely disappointed with The State News’ biased coverage of the MSU Students for Life vigil (“Abortion vigil stirs student debate,” SN 1/24). The photos were unfair and gave a distorted image of what really happened.

MSUSFL hosted the vigil, yet its photo was not the centerpiece of the article. Instead, the rude protesters who interrupted the peaceful vigil were glorified with a huge photo, which was above a tiny photo of those actually participating in the vigil.

I understand The State News is a liberal institution, however, it is not its job to editorialize on the front page of the paper. To add insult to injury, MSUSFL President Julie Crenshaw was misquoted. While there aren’t any blatant errors, all the quotes that were attributed to Julie were never spoken by her, neither to a State News reporter, nor to anyone else.

This is not the first time The State News has given biased coverage to the abortion issue - a Jan. 23 article was clearly slanted toward the pro-choice side, ending with a quote by Gretchen Whitmer implying that pro-choice supporters are the only “smart people” around today.

Two local television stations covered the Students for Life vigil fairly on their 11 p.m. news broadcasts. Maybe The State News could learn a thing or two from the professionals who know how to cover controversial events fairly.
