New Web site helps renters

February 6, 2001

Erin Carrier said she isn’t worrying about the type of people who may respond to her roommate-needed advertisement on the Web.

The parks and recreation and tourism resources sophomore utilized a new online service listing roommates and rental units in the Lansing area. The Web site lists Carrier’s name, address, phone number and ideal roommate characteristics.

“I’ve gotten a couple responses but not what I was looking for,” she said.

The site, www.LansingRentalGuide.com, is free and designed to assist students who are searching for places to rent or for roommates. The site, available since September, also lists students who are looking for a place to live.

“I did advertise online on a couple sites that were free, but not on the others you have to pay for,” Carrier said.

LansingRentalGuide.com is one of Lansing’s newest outlets listing rental needs.

“This site is growing extremely rapidly,” said Tara Davis, general manager of the Web site. “We’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback from it. It seems to be something that people are very excited about.”

Users have several options when viewing the Web site. Visitors can click on a topic such as “find a rental unit” and then type in a suitable sort of unit, location, rent and number of bedrooms.

The site then lists available options that match the criteria.

“Roommates is also a big draw for the students,” Davis said. “All the listings are free. The biggest thing with the Web page is that there’s so much more information that you’d get off of a web page versus a classified ad.”

LansingRentalGuide.com lists individuals who need roommates in the Lansing area and pairs roommates with common living preferences.

Katie Wall, a political science and pre-law sophomore, said the site is a resource that students should consider using when searching for housing.

“I would use it if I didn’t know where to live and if I didn’t have a place yet,” Wall said.

LansingRentalGuide.com also offers information for moving tips, renting with pets, household maintenance and repair, landlord tenant issues and getting organized.

The Web site receives roughly 1,760 hits per day.

Lansing resident Ben Sneden, 22, was searching for a roommate for his Lansing apartment in Pembrook Place.

Sneden said he and his roommate placed an advertisement on LansingRentalGuide.com and had a total of two calls before finding someone to live in the apartment.

“My roommate is the one who did the advertising and she said it was easy,” Sneden said.
