Police briefs 01/31/01

Four area teenagers were arrested Monday after allegedly assaulting and attempting to rob a 23-year-old student at Spartan Village.The student had just returned to his apartments after grocery shopping when the group of four males approached him, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. One of the teens purposely bumped into the student and a verbal disagreement occurred.Willis said the student was then pushed to the ground and was hit and kicked numerous times. Two Spartan Village residents who witnessed the attack chased the group away, he said.Police later arrested the group: Two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old of Holt and a 19-year-old Lansing man. The 16-year-olds were remanded to their parents’ custody. The other two men were taken to the Ingham County Jail until they could be arraigned.Charges against the four include assault, attempted robbery and curfew violations.The student received minor injuries to his chest and arms but declined medical attention.

  • A 21-year-old student reported his mountain bike stolen from an Engineering Building bike rack.The bicycle was taken between noon and 9 p.m. Monday, Willis said. It had been locked to the rack but the chain lock had been cut.The bike is valued at $230. Police have no suspects.
  • An 18-year-old student reported his laptop computer stolen from his Wonders Hall room.The student had left his door unlocked and said the computer was taken between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday, Willis said.The computer is valued at $2,800. Police have no suspects.
  • An 18-year-old student reported his cell phone stolen from his South Wonders Hall room.The student said his door was unlocked when the phone was believed to be taken between midnight and 3 a.m. Sunday, Willis said.The phone is valued at $150. Police have no suspects.
