Into the Streets, a community service project that helps Lansing-area nonprofit organizations, had a successful volunteer turnout at its third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

About 230 volunteers at 16 sites around the Lansing area helped with projects such as serving people lunch at a soup kitchen, sorting and distributing donated food and clothing items and cleaning classrooms.

The volunteers, mostly MSU students, spent Monday playing games with children, sprucing up Lansing and adding fresh coats of paint where needed.

“In general, we were really pleased with the turnout,” said Into the Streets spokeswoman and English sophomore Andrea Hart. “We had a much larger number than originally expected, but none of the sites minded having extra people.”
