Hockey team to hold fund-raiser

January 30, 2001

When the Spartans take the ice tonight, their opponents won’t check as hard as No. 7 Michigan did on Saturday.

In fact, they won’t check at all.

The nation’s No. 1-ranked hockey team, as of Monday night, will square off in Munn Ice Arena at 7 p.m. against the Legal Eagles, a men’s league team comprised of area lawyers, in their annual non-contact charity broomball game.

Tickets to the 25th annual game are $4 and proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Networkand help fund a new pediatric emergency room for Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.

Tickets for the event are available at the MSU Athletic Ticket Office in Jenison Field House, at Munn or from any local Kiwanis Club member.

MSU head coach Ron Mason said his players look forward to the game.

“Our program over the years has been community-minded and we take great pride in that,” he said. “This year, because it’s my charity, I really appreciate the support of the Kiwanis and Blue Line clubs.”

Mason will match wits with 54-A District Court Judge Charles Filice, the Legal Eagles’ coach.

All members of MSU’s team are expected to participate tonight.

Senior left wing Damon Whitten’s stepfather, Paul Moggach, will be MSU’s honorary goaltender tonight after bidding $500 for the honor at a MSU Blue Line Club Luncheon.
