Today campus groups will begin to recognize the 28th anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion.

Zoology junior Hillary Noyes said there will be representatives from Planned Parenthood of Michigan at the Union from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

Noyes, who is helping to organize the visit, said the representatives will be there to offer information and updates on abortion legislation as well as cake to those who come by.

Students for Life will be holding a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Beaumont Tower.

Political theory senior Margaret Closs said the university will not allow the group to have candles at the tower so students will be walking through campus with candles.

“We will be taking the light of hope with us when we leave Beaumont Tower,” Closs said.

A speaker to address the participants, possibly a woman who works at the Pregnancy Services of Greater Lansing, 1045 E. Grand River Ave., who planned to have an abortion and decided against it, will also be included.

This is the second year the Students for Life group has held a vigil in honor of the lost lives due to abortion.

Also on Tuesday, the MSU Medical Students for Choice will host a speaker at noon in B-105 Life Sciences Building.

Joy Whitten of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Michigan, 300 N. Clippert St. in Lansing, will talk about how Roe v. Wade affects the life of women today.

Group President Sujata Shende said it is important to address the Supreme Court decision as well as abortion in general.

“Many people know that abortion is legal,” Shende said. “But what people don’t realize is that it is often not accessible.”

Shende said there are many reasons abortion is still not available, including the problem of waiting periods at abortion clinics.

As a medical student, she said there are many people who are not being trained in abortions and many others who are hesitant about going into the field.

All of the events are open to the public.
