Swimming and diving

The men’s swimming and diving team beat Eastern Michigan on Friday in the teams’ second meeting of the year.

First-place finishes in every event except the 50-meter freestyle gave the Spartans a 25-point lead over the Eagles. The final score was 131.5-106.5.

In their last meeting, Eastern beat MSU by 38 points to take second place in a quad meet in Ypsilanti.

Junior Aaron Mahaney and sophomore Joe Brennan helped the Spartan victory with first-place finishes in two events each. Mahaney took first in the 1,000-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly. Brennan took the 200-meter individual medley and the 500-meter freestyle.

The team heads to Notre Dame, for the Notre Dame Invitational on Nov. 30.

Men’s cross country

The men’s cross country team, ranked fifth in the region and 23rd in the nation, finished sixth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet Sunday, finishing its season.

The team failed to qualify for the NCAA championships.

However, sophomore Ben Evans and freshman Steve Padgett could receive individual at-large bids to nationals. Bids will be announced today.

Evans was the Spartans’ top finisher at the Great Lakes meet in Ypsilanti. He finished 14th with a time of 31:33.9.

Padgett also placed in the top 20, finishing 20th with a time of 31:52.9. Wisconsin’s Jared Vanderhoof won the individual event with a time of 30:47.1.

The Badgers, who won the Big Ten championship two weeks ago, won the team event at the Great Lakes meet with 75 points, 115 points better than MSU’s 190.

Sophomores Jared Aldrich, Jeff Mulder, Brian Wilson and Andrew Alley and freshman Andy Marsh also ran for the Spartans, but none of them came in the top 50.

Wrestling

Senior Cory Posey placed 10th in the 152-pound weight class at the World University Championships in Tokyo last week.

He was named to the U.S. Greco-Roman team based on his performance on national and Olympic levels.

Competing for the United States, Posey lost to wrestlers from Belarus and Azerbaijan.

The wrestling team canceled its Green and White scrimmage, scheduled for Sunday, because of a hectic schedule. The Spartans will next compete Saturday in the Michigan State Open in Jenison Field House.
