SN endorses:

Complete analysis of all the endorsed candidates.

  • For the presidential election, The State News endorses Vice President Al Gore, a Democrat. Gore has the political education necessary to be an effective leader. He will protect the solvency of Social Security, defend a woman’s right to an abortion and fight for the protection of the environment.

  • For the MSU Board of Trustees, The State News endorses Democrat Dorothy Gonzales and Republican Scott Romney, both incumbents. Both candidates are active on campus and have a strong grasp of issues that face MSU. Both will defend the tuition guarantee and support keeping board meetings open to the public. Both will fight to close the funding gap, and both are dedicated to improving faculty salaries.

  • For the U.S. Senate, The State News endorses U.S. Rep. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat. She has the political experience necessary and will be an effective advocate for Michigan families, not corporations. Stabenow is a supporter of the McCain-Feingold bill to ban soft money from campaigns, and has been a front-runner in developing an affordable prescription drug plan for seniors.

  • For the U.S. House of Representatives, The State News endorses Democrat Dianne Byrum. Byrum also is a supporter of the McCain-Feingold legislation to reform campaign financing. She plans to place Social Security dollars in a lockbox, and opposes privatizing the funds. She is also a supporter of common sense gun control laws, and has proved herself to be a strong advocate for the environment.

  • For the state House of Representatives, The State News endorses Democrat Gretchen Whitmer. Whitmer intends to challenge the Legislature to gain state funding for MSU, and has showed interest in serving on the higher education subcommittee.

  • The State News does not endorse Proposal 1. The proposal equates to abandoning public schools, which are the cornerstone of our country’s philosophy. The proposal violates the separation of church and state and is unlikely to affect students it is supposed to target.

  • The State News also does not endorse Proposal 2. It is unclear why this proposal was created and what its effects will be. The proposal should be reintroduced when its purpose, wording and impact are clear.
