We have received a number of complaints regarding last weeks cartoon on the Opinion Page, depicting the crucified Christ. The complaints we received objected to what is perceived as mockery of the crucifixion.
I am not taking a position on Proposal 1. Moreover, as you know, I strongly support free speech and an independent student newspaper. I believe The State News and its editorial cartoons perform an important service for the university.
On the other hand, I have consistently said that I reserve the opportunity to comment, not so much as president, but as an individual member of our community, when I become aware of the use of words or images that are disrespectful of others for reasons such as race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or religious belief. I am, therefore, expressing my serious concern about The State News recent insensitive use of a religious symbol held sacred by many members of our community.
