Peterson signs with Raptors

October 4, 2000

Morris Peterson’s roots may be sunk in Michigan soil, but after signing a three-year contract for an undisclosed amount Monday with the Toronto Raptors, the former MSU basketball star can finally call Canada home.

Peterson, the 21st pick in the first round of the 2000 NBA draft, signed for the maximum amount available for his pick, his agent Thad Foucher said. Foucher added that Peterson signed for 120 percent of the designated salary set for his pick.

Peterson, who helped the Spartans win the NCAA title last March, began training camp in Buffalo, N.Y. on Tuesday.

Foucher said that Peterson is adjusting well.

“Everything is great with him,” he said. “He had his first workout (Tuesday) morning. He seems very upbeat. He loves his teammates.”

What Peterson’s role on the team will be is not quite set in stone yet, Foucher said.

“They have a good group of veterans, and a good group of young guys,” he said. “But Morris played really well in his summer league, and that’s helped him make the transition into training week.”

Peterson, an 2000 first-team Sporting News All-American, ranks ninth in all-time points in MSU history with 1,588.
