Can drive funds United Way

Accounting freshman Kristina Stoiljkovic, business marketing sophomore Koren Ivie and pre-veterinary medicine freshman Erin Mills collect cans to raise money for the United Way in Holden Hall on Thursday.

Holden Hall government and SYNERGY, a community service group, began collecting bottles and cans by the hundreds Thursday night to raise funds for the Capital Area United Way.

The event is one of several efforts to increase MSU’s contribution to this year’s United Way campaign throughout campus.

MSU has pledged to raise 10 percent of the campaign’s $6.9 million goal, which will benefit service-providing agencies in the Lansing area.

A challenge among the residence halls to raise the most funds will continue through October.

Like most residence halls, Holden Hall will continue to raise money in any way possible.

Holden Hall director Joshua Gillespie said his hall plans to collect money in several ways. A hot dog and chips sale for residents will be held Sunday, and the bottle and can drive collection will continue through next week.

Marylee Davis, a higher education professor who chairs the MSU campaign, said the university is well on its way to reaching its goal.

“We are very excited that as of Oct. 13, we are at 45 percent of our goal,” she said.
