Hoosiers end soccer teams NCAA hopes

Bloomington, Ind. - The MSU men’s soccer team met Indiana for the third time this season Sunday and the outcome was the same. Indiana (15-3-1 overall) defeated MSU 1-0 in the second round of the CAA Tournament on Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. With the loss, the Spartans’ first tournament season in 32 years is over, and fourth-seeded Indiana advances to the third round to play Rutgers. “I thought we were a little nervous early,” head coach Joe Baum said.

Mens team awaits news on NCAA, women reflect on season success

Any hopes the MSU women’s soccer team had of continuing its season were lost Monday when the NCAA announced the 64 teams that will make up the tournament bracket.But the men’s soccer team still has four days to wait and hope that its season had that little extra spark that would push it into the 48-team bracket.The men haven’t been in the tournament since 1969, though in 1967 and 1968 the team was NCAA co-champions.The goalkeeper for the co-champion teams, MSU’S current head coach Joe Baum, said he believes this team could hold its own against the teams he played on.“I think if you look at our team today, we don’t have any All-Americans, but we’re more solid throughout the lineup,” he said.

Postseason begins against Ohio State

The eight seniors on MSU men’s soccer team may only have one game left.If they want to continue to play after today, they’ll have to earn the extra games - with wins.The Spartans will have to beat Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament today in Madison, Wis.The team shutout Ohio State in their only contest this season, winning 3-0 but is expecting better competition from the Buckeyes in the tournament.“There’s no doubt we have the talent to beat them, but they’re a very good team and to beat them twice in one year will be very difficult,” head coach Joe Baum said.If MSU bests Ohio State, the second round holds the winner of the Penn State vs.

After three years at Brown, senior midfielder Anders Kelto returned this year to his home state for his final year of collegiate soccer.The Traverse City native graduated from Brown last December, but still had one year of eligibility.

Team refuels with shutout over Broncos

After Sunday’s 1-0 loss in double overtime to Penn State, the MSU men’s soccer team dropped down to at least third in the Big Ten. But the Spartans proved they could still compete with a 4-0 win against Western Michigan on Wednesday at Old College Field. The Spartans (9-3-1, 3-2 Big Ten) controlled the game from the start, but could not get the ball into the net. Junior forward Brett Konley fired three shots without nailing a goal before the Spartans were able to score. “We were scared our offense wasn’t going to come out that well,” sophomore forward Thomas Trivelloni said.

Krass offense honored

Two years ago, sophomore midfielder Jeff Krass scored 23 goals for Brighton High School. Now he is being recognized for only scoring a third of that. Wolverines cant keep up

Despite the menacing weather, a crowd of 245 gathered to watch the MSU men’s soccer team down the Oakland Grizzlies 4-1 Wednesday at Old College Field. The game started slow with neither team creating many chances for themselves. The Spartans (7-2-1, 2-1 Big Ten) went into halftime 1-0, but both teams only had two shots on goal for the half. But Oakland (4-3-2) came out a little flat as well, allowing the Spartans to remain in the game with their subpar performance. “Both teams played sloppy soccer for half an hour,” head coach Joe Baum said.

A crowd of 635 braved the cold to watch the MSU men’s soccer team best No. 15 Ohio State 3-0 Sunday at Old College Field.MSU began its win by keeping the ball in Ohio State’s territory for almost all of the first half.Despite the pressure, the Spartans (6-2-1, 2-1-0 Big Ten) couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities, sending many of the players to the locker room frustrated.“It was frustrating because with the chances we had, we didn’t miss by much,” junior forward Brett Konley said.
