I will clarify that I am not justifying a violent act nor lessening the tragedy of Elliot Rodger’s shootings in UC Santa Barbara. Those are not my intentions and, as a feminist, I am completely against his actions.

We know that not all men perpetuate violence against women. But all women live with the threat of male violence, every day, all over the world.

Living away from home provides more opportunities for growth and freedom. It forces a person to come into their own and figure out how they’re going to make ends meet, and after college, that’s going to be the reality for a lot of people.

When finals week ended, I attended MSU’s LeaderShape program with 49 other MSU students. During the week-long retreat, we got to learn about the fundamentals of working with people and making a difference. Whether it was shaping our visions or discovering our preferred approach to obstacles, we all came back knowing something we could do to improve ourselves. At one of the lectures, the program went over something simple that, for a long time now, I had been unknowingly struggling with — listening.

There is a stigma that follows people who take medication for disorders like anxiety. With more medicines being developed each year and rising awareness efforts, I don’t see as much criticism towards people who take medicine anymore. And maybe that’s caused people to be more open to discussing anxiety and depression.

For some reason I always thought my last day of college classes would hold some kind of special significance. As cheesy as it sounds, I pictured it as a sentimental affair, one where I would show up on time, pay more attention and maybe retain a few snippets for when I look back on it decades from now.

My paradise might not be perfect, but a paradise it remains. For me, this was the perfect identification of my country before I left it.

M y cell phone background is a photo of a waterfall in Puerto Rico. My specialization is environmental studies. In June, I will go on a backpacking trip in Costa Rica. This semester, I took a class called Voluntary Simplicity, which was about living with less. I have been to conferences about environmental education and activism. I try to recycle everyday. My friends know they cannot litter – at least, not in front of me. Long story short, I love nature.

I recently turned 21, and the East Lansing bar scene has been a whole new experience for me.

F requent encounters with something can desensitize you from it. For example, I came to college as a neat freak, but the pile of dirty dishes in my kitchen sink seems rather normal and unthreatening nowadays.

If you invite me to a place where there will be nachos and beer for free, I will dress up in five seconds. I think I might be able to become the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest male dressed.

I have been able to see a new face of journalism in my days at The State News, a face that wants to rebel against the stigma of censorship. I came to realize this was never an option at media outlets in my home country, Honduras.

Being Catholic is something I take pride in and will always love. But after taking time to think about faith and science, I’ve come to realize some concepts in my religion clash with reality.

I was born and raised around smart, strong, independent and genuinely beautiful females. Throughout my life, I have seen these women make an impact in the community and in other people’s lives, as well as give life to future world citizens. But it has not always been easy for them. I have seen each of them struggle as they try to fit into a society that puts masculinity over ability.

C ollege obviously is a stressful time for students. We are constantly studying to maintain our grades. In my major, it’s normal for students to work on their projects overnight in one of the labs at the Engineering Building. As one of my engineering friends describes it, she practically lives in the Engineering Building toward the end of the semester.
