MSU alumni John Duffey, Barbara Ross-Lee and Michael Longaker will be the commencement speakers at MSU’s fall commencement. Duffey will speak at 10 a.m. on Dec. 17, Ross-Lee will speak at 2 p.m. on Dec. 17 and Longaker will speak at MSU’s advanced degree graduation ceremony on at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 16.

On Friday MSU head basketball coach Tom Izzo — along with former NBA stars Yao Ming, Sheryl Swoopes, Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Izzo, now headed into his 22nd year at the helm of the Spartans, is known for giving enthusiastic and emotional speeches. Izzo said at the induction ceremony on Friday that he was very thankful for the honor and repeatedly thanked his players for helping him forge a hall of fame coaching career.

With all the talk of a doping scandal and the Zika Virus derailing plans for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, it can be easy to forget some local talent will show in force representing not only their country, but their current school or alma mater. A number of Spartans are currently competing to qualify for the Olympics or already have.

Senior guard Denzel Valentine is off to a great start this season, as he has recorded two triple-doubles and averages 17.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. In response, Valentine has been named to two prestigious award watch lists.
