Dantonio nets two big commitments

The MSU football team doubled the size of its 2010 recruiting class on Monday and Tuesday by adding two Detroit players, one being the sizable and highly touted Will Gholston.

Gholston, the 6-foot-7, 250-pound defensive end from Detroit Southeastern, is listed as a four-star recruit by Scout.com and Rivals.com and was pursued by schools such as LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan. The cousin of former Ohio State Buckeye Vernon Gholston — selected sixth overall by the New York Jets in the 2008 NFL Draft — Will Gholston is rated as the 47th best prospect in the 2010 recruiting class by Rivals.

The Spartans also added defensive back Mylan Hicks out of Detroit Renaissance on Monday.

Both Rivals and Scout have listed the 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect as a three-star recruit. Hicks was on the radars of several Big Ten teams, including Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue and Michigan, as well as schools such as Missouri and Vanderbilt. Rivals ranked him the 31st best cornerback in the 2010 recruiting class.

Gholston and Hicks give the Spartans four verbal commitments for 2010, joining Traverse City’s St. Francis Catholic four-star (Rivals) linebacker Max Bullough and Detroit’s Crockett Vocational Technical Center three-star (Scout) wide receiver Tony Lippett.
