Allen talks about suspension
Junior guard Chris Allen shed some light on his recent one-game suspension Monday night, speaking to reporters following the team’s award banquet.
Allen said the suspension stemmed from an argument he and men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo had sometime between the afternoon of March 8 and the morning of March 9.
“Me and coach had a little argument,” Allen said. “I had some words, he had some words, I had some more words and that’s what happened.”
Allen said he and Izzo have moved past the incident and Allen believes he will grow from it.
“I’ve seen what I have to do,” Allen said “I just have to pick up the slack on my end, be better all around and focus on this run.”
Along with suspending Allen, Izzo benched junior guard Durrell Summers for much of the second half in Friday’s loss to Minnesota. Golden Gopher guard Blake Hoffarber scored 14 points and hit four 3-point shots — several in the face of Summers. The Spartans missed Allen defense — as shown by Allen being named a corecipient of the John E. Benington Best Defensive Player Award Monday night.
“It was tough. Seeing plays if I was in I could have done something, it was just hurtful,” Allen said. “I was just hurting so that humbled me a lot.”
