No excuse for housing intolerance

Editor’s Note: Views expressed in guest columns and letters to the editor reflect the views of the author, not the views of The State News.

This is one of the major times of the year when people search for new housing space in East Lansing. Because there is no MSU Housing Fair this spring, it is especially important to remind readers of East Lansing’s civil rights ordinance that protects against discrimination in housing, public accommodations, services and employment. The ordinance covers certain groups that also are protected at the state and federal level. However, it also includes protections for people based on their student status, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

This means landlords cannot tell you they will not rent to you because you are a student or, conversely, that they only rent to students. They cannot refuse to rent to you because you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender — or if they think you are.

If you have reason to believe that you have been discriminated against, write down the names involved, the date and time and what exactly transpired. Then visit the city’s website, www.cityofeastlansing.com, download the initial inquiry form found under “Civil Rights Complaints” and turn in the completed form to City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, as soon as possible.

It is important that each of us asserts ourselves and our rights in the face of discrimination.

William Sawyer-Todd, Chairman of East Lansing’s Human Relations Commission
