Gymnastics defeats Illinois-Chicago on senior night

March 3, 2012

With senior night winding down, as it became clear that MSU was going to come out on top, senior Jackie Berg beside the floor, head bowed, simply overwhelmed by the moment.

Sophomore Dani Levy noticed and quickly knelt to hug her. The two embraced for a moment, Berg crying softly, before separating and beginning to celebrate.

The Spartans took down 28th-ranked Illinois-Chicago 195.55-195.175 in their seniors’ final appearance at Jenison Field House this year. It was their third consecutive week finishing above 195 and their 195.55 mark was the best of the year, head coach Kathie Klages said.

“With senior night, you’re not sure what you’re gonna get,” Klages said. “But they did an outstanding job. They were comfortable and confident out there.”

Levy placed first in the all-around competition, thanks to wins in floor and uneven bars, where she set a new personal best at 9.875. But she shrugged it off, calling it “just another day.” Instead, she focused on the team as a whole.

“It felt like our best meet,” Levy said. “We kept the energy up, and we had fun.”

Meanwhile, freshman Ashley Noll placed second or higher in the vault, floor and balance beam — winning vault and tying for second in the other two. Her vault and beam scores — 9.825 and 9.80 — respectively, were new personal bests.

“I just tried to stay confident,” she said. “But we all did really well. We’re happy with our performance.”

Berg, who finished second to Levy in bars, was trying to take her final meet at MSU in stride.

“It was fun,” she said. “We had a good time. But it was hard not to be emotional.”

Berg said she would miss “the comfort of competing at home.”

“It’s like a family here (at Jenison),” she said. “We really get to know the fans here. And they’re great.”

Klages really liked what she saw from the team, but even more so from her four seniors — Daneen Haba, Alyssa Brennan, Selina Rodriguez and Berg.

“I’m so proud to see all four of them out there,” Klages said. “They’ve gone through a lot of adversity, but they really rose to the occasion tonight.”

Senior night may now be behind them, but there’s still work to be done. The Spartans leave for Anchorage, Alaska, on Tuesday, where they’ll take on Alaska-Anchorage in two meets. Klages admitted the travel was “a bit rough,” but nobody on the team seemed too worried.

“We’ll have fun with it,” Levy said. “We’ll work with what we’ve got.”

The team is currently hovering around the cutoff to make the NCAA Regionals. Only 36 teams make it, and MSU is just behind the 36th spot. MSU’s regional qualifying score, or RQS, skews a bit low right now because one of the road scores that contributes to it is very low.

The trip to Alaska and the subsequent trip to Ann Arbor to face Michigan should allow them to replace that low score and move up in the RQS rankings.

“As long as we do our job in Alaska,” Berg said, “we will score like we have at home and move up.”

Klages said the team will be leaving on Tuesday in an effort to get acclimated before the first meet on Friday. The second meet will take place that Sunday.
