When getting to class, some students bike, drive or walk. But Alyssa McNure prefers to jump on her moped.
“I’ve had it for about a year,” said the media and communication technology sophomore. “It’s convenient for short distances, … but often times, there’s not anywhere to park it.”
MSU police Assistant Chief Mike Rice said there was a presentation at the Physical Plant’s Construction Junction meeting last week to show what other universities, including the University of Iowa, have done to address the parking issue for mopeds, including designated motorcycle and moped spaces across campus. But no details for an MSU solution officially are in the works.
The use of mopeds on campus seems to be increasing, and Rice said there are more registered now than in the past.
“Mopeds have been allowed to park at bike racks, and that’s the status we have at this point,” Rice said, adding concern has been raised about mopeds being problematic at racks and around academic buildings.
McNure said she typically parks her moped across campus on bike racks since no designated areas are available.
In an email, MSU Bikes Service Center Manager Tim Potter said such a problem has been noticed, and what was presented at the meeting was a draft recommendation for the All University Traffic and Transportation Committee. He said he could not speculate on any solution at this time.
MSU police Lt. Randy Holton said the police treat mopeds like any typical motor vehicle. People have been cited for drunk driving, traffic violations and driving mopeds on the sidewalks, although he did not have citation numbers, he said.
Mopeds must be registered through MSU police, he said.
“(You) have to have a parking permit, which you can get through the parking office,” Holton said, adding it is legal for them to be parked at bike racks and the lot the permit designates.
Although people sometimes drive to the racks to park their moped, it is against the law and people should walk them to their designated spot, he said.
University engineer Bob Nestle said there currently are no parking areas on campus dedicated for mopeds, and McNure said something more permanent would be ideal.
“Depending on the location of (these spaces), I think it would be a nice place to keep it if you don’t plan on using it for a while,” she said.
