Face Time: Kelcey Gapske

February 23, 2012

On Wednesday night, the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, elected social work junior and current RHA Vice President Kelcey Gapske as the new president for the 2012-13 year. Gapske will spend the next several weeks transitioning into her new role before officially taking office April 11.

State News: What was your reaction upon being elected?

Kelcey Gapske: I was elated. It was probably one of the best experiences I’ve had this year and just a lot of stress relief. It’s what I’ve been working for this year.”

SN: What are you most excited about for next year as president?

KG: I’m most excited about getting to talk to the administration, just being involved in conversation and difficult decisions the university’s involved in. That would be the aspect I most want to get involved in, making sure that RHA is properly represented and students are properly advocated for.

SN: How will you help strengthen RHA as an organization?

KG: By focusing internally, you really work on the framework of the organization, in terms of the core services we provide and what we use our taxpayer dollars for — RHA TV, movie offices. … These services have been struggling.”

SN: What is the status of current RHA initiatives, including improving campus fitness center accessibility and advocating for gender-neutral housing?

KG: As of right now, the fitness center bill is not something necessarily we could really do much for. We’re already in talks with Campus Living Services and Residence
Life, and that’s our main focus, that there’s some results. As far as flexible housing, that piece is already in the works and making sure that RHA is still involved in the talks and that we’re still in progress and moving forward on that next year.”
