Lansing — A bill that would provide legal protection to those who are dangerously drunk passed nearly unanimously in the Michigan House of Representatives Judiciary Committee this morning, and now will move on to the House floor for further consideration.
The bill is the latest attempt at legislation that would make it illegal for police to issue a minor in possession charge for a person who contacts police for medical attention. The bill also would protect minors who seek help for a friend.
A similar bill passed with little resistance in the House before dying in a Senate committee at the end of 2010.
A representative from ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, testified in support of the bill, while others attended to back the legislation. City of East Lansing officials also were present, including Mayor Diane Goddeeris and East Lansing Police Chief Juli Liebler.
