Pair of Spartans earn weekly field hockey honors

October 19, 2011

The MSU field hockey team cleaned up in the weekly Big Ten awards, as sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy and freshman forward Allie Ahern both were honored for their weekend play.

Cassidy notched her second Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award this season and seventh weekly award of her career after tying her career-high in saves with 14 against Ohio State. Cassidy also had two crucial saves in penalty strokes to give the Spartans (7-9 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) their first conference victory of the year, 2-1. On the season, Cassidy has racked up an impressive .745 save percentage.

Ahern was awarded her first ever Big Ten Freshman of the Week after scoring the Spartans’ lone goal in regulation and what would end up being the game winning penalty stroke. Ahern is the team’s second highest scorer this season with four goals on the year. This marks the second week in a row the Spartans have claimed freshman of the week honors with forward Abby Barker taking home the honors last week.

MSU will return to action at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at home when it takes on No. 7 Michigan.
